VW Golf, Transmission Problems
Q: I have a ‘96 Golf GL, automatic, and
it doesn't seem like my car wants to shift out of third gear, regardless
of manual efforts. The gear indicator light highlights all the gears,
not just one. So before I have the money to bring it in, I'd like to have
some idea what it is. Thank you for accepting my question in advance....Steve
A: First,
is the transmission fluid at the correct level? This question may seem
obvious, but you’d be surprised how often something this simple is overlooked.
If the fluid level is correct then you’ll need to find a repair facility
that has a diagnostic scan tool that can communicate with the TCM. Your
VW Golf’s transmission is controlled by a Transmission Control Module
(TCM) AKA computer. The TCM manages most every aspect of the transmission
operation. Unfortunately, there is very little diagnostics that can be
performed on the transmission without this scan tool. So to get an idea
on what’s ailing your transmission, you got’a plug in.
