Ford Taurus, Transmission Removal
Q:
I may
be removing the transmission from a 95 Ford Taurus in the near future
and I'm wondering how difficult is this? I have done this type of work
before, but only on rear wheel drive cars and trucks. I was told that
I would need to remove the engine as well, is this true? The previous
times I've removed a transmission I was in a large garage with a lift,
but this time it will be in an average size garage with no lift.

A:
There
is a big difference between removing a transmission from a rear wheel
drive vehicle and a front wheel drive vehicle. The vehicle youve
chosen for youre first experience is right up there on the high
side of challenging, especially when youre not going to have a lift
to work with. Whatever time you think it is going to take you I would
suggest double to triple that time. In most cases weve found it
to be much quicker to just remove the engine and transmission as an assembly
and then service the transmission as needed. Depending on which engine
the vehicle is equipped with, you may approach it differently but in any
case allow ample time and work safely.
